Eco-Activity

Ulu Temburong National Park

Ulu Temburong National Park occupies almost 40% of the Temburong district of Brunei Darussalam. It is regarded by many as the best preserved tropical rainforest on Borneo. The area has never been logged; the massive trees are hundreds of years old. You will notice the changes as you travel upriver in the longboat to visit Temburong National Park.

For prices, enquiry and booking - Click here

temburongmap The park includes a range of wilderness habitats, from lowland forest and jungle rainforest, to montane forest at an elevation of almost 2000 metres.

There are no roads into the park.

Temburong has often been regarded as a refuge for threatened species from throughout Borneo. The isolated Temburong National Park is accessible only by hiking or longboat.

The topography is mountainous, with steep slopes, narrow ridges and numerous peaks. Visitors entering the area are always amazed by the transition from cultivation around Batang Duri village, and secondary vegetation to deep jungle, as they travel upriver towards the National Park entrance.

The Belalong River basin within the park is reserved solely for scientific study. The Kuala Belalong Field Studies Centre operated by the University of Brunei Darussalam hosts scientists from around the world to survey and study the eco systems and animal inhabitants.

Isolation, mountainous terrain, and a dedicated preservation policy have protected the park from destructive logging, slash and burn clearing and plantation development that has scarred many areas of Borneo. The Ulu Temburong National Park is a haven for scientists, wildlife and all people who appreciate the imposing grandeur of nature.

Visitors to the National Park need to bring their sense of adventure. The longboat trip 12 kms upstream through the rapids can be wet and exciting.

Lboatmix1s.jpg (46810 bytes)

Occasionally the longboat needs to be pushed over shallow water, or a river section must be walked around while the boatmen negotiate the rapid.  The river's height is determined by recent rainfall in the catchment area upstream.

Our boatmen and guides grew up in the area. The river is their second home. It gives them access to fishing, fruit gathering, and hill paddy rice fields outside the National Park. While establishing the nearby Outward Bound School, our Managing Director helped pioneer local tour operation standards, communication systems, activities and support services to assist visitors  experience Ulu Temburong National Park.

tmbprkmps.jpg (94647 bytes)

The changing vegetation is very noticeable as you approach the park entrance. From the secondary forest and traditional hill paddy adjacent to the Batang Duri longhouse, the view along the river changes to towering primary rainforest, and the river becomes narrows as the park entrance approaches.

For most visitors, moving on foot within the National Park is  via  the  elevated wooden walkways and prepared trails.

Natural processes occasionally disrupt the walkways because of  soil movement and tree falls. Sometimes it is necessary to walk around sections under repair, and some walkway routes can be closed for maintenance.

The walkways provide relatively easy passage above the rough terrain, and protect the lightly vegetated ground and fragile soils. Some walkways follow gentle gradients along the Temburong River. Others climb over ridge tops to access adjacent valleys and river crossing points. Suspension bridges cross rivers and streams. The most popular walk is the approximately 1200 steps up to the base of the Canopy Walkway.

The walks are within the capability of normally healthy people. Our  youngest visitor to the Canopy Walkway was – 4 months (yet be born) and the oldest 86. Walks and activities can be selected to suit personal preferences. For some people, the longboat ride, gentle walkway walks, relaxing beside the river, and enjoying this untouched environment is sufficient. Others prefer to walk and climb to the top of every viewpoint, and ride every rapid.

The Canopy Walkway rises over 60 metres from the ridge top to above the tree tops.

Watch the birds, take in the view and wait for other jungle dwellers to arrive.

Arrange a pre-dawn visit to experience the jungle awakening, foraging birds or animals, and the rising sun.

Intrepid Tours' day tours overnight and multi day tours give the opportunity to enjoy Ulu Temburong National Park, other nearby protected areas (eg Bukit Patoi Forest Reserve), local communities and lifestyles (eg: produce market in Bangar town, or stay a night or two in our Longhouse base).

Our day tours from Bandar Seri Begawan are the most popular way for visitors to experience Ulu Temburong National Park. Our HERITAGE day tour includes morning and afternoon tea at our (modern) Longhouse Base, with the opportunity to see how traditional longhouse values are retained in a modern building, and to meet some of the families. A highly acclaimed mini-buffet style lunch is prepared at the longhouse and taken up-river to the NP. Afternoon tea at the Longhouse gives the opportunity to change out of wet clothes before the boat ride back to BSB.

Our EXPLORER day tour visits the Tamu (local market) in Bangar town for morning tea and to select items to take upstream in the boat for lunch near the NP, adjacent to a small waterfall. Afternoon tea - following the NP visit - is in an air-cond local style cafe in Bangar town, with possibly time to look around the town, with it's shops and local handicrafts while waiting for the water taxi departure.

Our overnight and multi-night tours to Temburong National Park create the opportunity to be on the Canopy Walkway soon after dawn, with spectacular views over the surrounding rainforest, and beyond.

Many of our guests enjoy an extended rainforest experience by spending at least one night in Temburong. Our overnight and 3d/2n tour programmes in Temburong integrate four accommodation options:

1. Longhouse - air-cond private rooms with adjacent bathroom at our
Temburong operations base. Discover a different lifestyle.
2. Local hotel in Bangar town. The choice for additional comfort.
3. Home-stay or Guest-house- air-cond motel style rooms with bathroom; to experience how local families live today.
4. River Camp - local style huts and campsite upstream on the
Temburong River. Popular for wildlife spotting, birdwatchers etc

The most popular is our Longhouse Base (air-cond private rooms), where the opportunity to meet and interact with the community, stay in a private rooms within a family home, help prepare and enjoy the meals, enjoy an evening forest walk or river safari (see Proboscis Monkeys and other wildlife along the banks, and crocodiles after dark) are highlights of the visit. Large groups can "camp" in the longhouse communal space, using our mattresses, sleeping bags and sheets.

The River Camp - a traditional style camp beside the Temburong River - with sleeping platforms in simple cabins or hammocks in the trees, is  in the forest. It is particularly attractive to wildlife enthusiasists who can explore quietly along trails or the river bank at dusk or dawn to look for the rainforest's secretive natural inhabitants. This accommodation option is especially popular with bird-watchers. The River Camp also gives early morning  access to the Canopy Walkway, for those visitors who like to be there soon after dawn.

Our other overnight accommodation options in Temburong include local style home-stay or guest-house, or a recently established 3 star hotel in Bangar town. All can be combined with our evening forest walk or river safari to experience  Temburong's unique rural and rainforest environments, and early departures next morning to enjoy the Temburong River longboat trip while the air is cool, the mist is on the water and the walk up to the Canopy Walkway is in the cool morning.

Our 3 day/2 night packages give the opportunity to integrate multiple accommodation options, take walks under giant trees, along creeks and amongst lush vegetation to isolated waterfalls and jungle pools, and see the area at sunrise and sunset. And of course, to have fun riding our inflatable rafts and canoes down the Temburong River rapids, relaxing on the riverside, enjoying the peace and tranquility of the magnificent national park setting. Rafting is a fun family experience; the Temburong River is a great place for beginners.

Our facilities and activities in Temburong are available to suit couples, families, schools, or corporate groups. We regularly combine options to create tailor made programmes for special interest groups.

A variety of accommodation options give our guests the opportunity  choose. For example, the modern  adaptation of  longhouse in Sibut with air conditioned private rooms, located near Temburong River.

Visits to Ulu Temburong National Park are very popular with educational tours and special interest groups, such as bird watchers.

Enjoy the rainforest wilderness, swim in warm mountain streams, hike to an isolated waterfall, get wet in an afternoon rainstorm and wake each morning to the sounds of nature's jungle orchestra.

lilo2.jpg (50692 bytes)

The fresh water rivers are warm. Activities such as cascading down smaller sections of river, and rafting the larger rapids, are all part of the fun. They can be integrated into a progressive visit programme.

The Ulu Temburong National Park is a special place. Preserved, untouched and with a variety of activity and interest options, it's definitely a highlight of every visit to Brunei.

Our local and international staff are specially trained and experienced with the environment and the activities. Operating practices and safety equipment are to international standards,  set by our Managing Director, who has  twenty five years experience with adventure travel, running Outward Bound centres, and established Brunei's Outward Bound School, adjacent to the Ulu Temburong National Park.

A visit to the Ulu Temburong National Park begins just 15 minutes drive from Brunei's international airport.
