Golf on Borneo

 Brunei - Labuan - Miri

North West Borneo is a favourite destination for visitors to enjoy Borneo's unique wildlife, the culture and heritage. Intrepid Tours now makes available to regional and international golfers, a selection of golfing experiences on courses created by world renowned players and designers, including the "Augusta of Asia"; the Royal Brunei Golf and Country Club course, designed by Ronald Frame for His Majesty, the Sultan of Brunei.

Bandar Seri Begawan - the capital of Brunei Darussalam -  is a convenient base from which to enjoy the nearby golf courses of Brunei, Labuan Island (Federal Malaysian Territory in Brunei Bay) and Miri (across the border in the Malaysian state of Sarawak).

Our golf packages - from three to six days - give golfers  the opportunity to enjoy a golf vacation on a variety of courses - each with their particular challenges - experience great resort style hotels, see Borneo's natural and cultural heritage, and taste the local foods.  We also have supplementary programmes for non-golfers to enjoy the local attractions while the golfers are playing.

Our golfing programmes take advantage of the close proximity of seven golf courses:

  • Three in Bandar Seri Begawan

  • One on Labuan Island  (a short ferry ride away across Brunei Bay)

  • One near Brunei's oil and gas base (1.5 hours drive from Bandar Seri Begawan) at Seria.

  • Two in Miri, just across the border (1 hour drive) from Seria; including the first golf course established on the island of Borneo.

Bandar Seri Begawan is the Capital of Brunei Darussalam. A modern city with most amenities and a well-educated population that is accustomed to high standards of living and international travel. But - because of the distribution of wealth form it's oil and gas resources - is also able to preserve many traditional lifestyles, such as the water village, and the Borneo forests and wildlife.

Bandar Seri Begawan is the embarkation point for Brunei's Temburong National Park; the best protected rainforest on the island of Borneo. And it's possible to take an early morning or late evening boat ride to see Borneo's unique Proboscis Monkeys - along with other wildlife - just along from the Sultan's Palace.

Along with shopping and dining out - popular distractions for Bruneians -   non-golfers can expect plenty of attractions to keep them busy wile the golfers are playing.

The Empire Hotel and Country Club - Bandar Seri Begawan
Combine golf with 5 star resort style accommodation, pools, spar, great food, other sports/activities and remarkable service.  Excellent for golfers and non-golfers.

Royal Brunei Recreation Club - Golf course - Bandar Seri Begawan
Adjacent to the airport, with numerous hidden challenges.

Royal Brunei Golf Country and Club - Bandar Seri Begawan
Just a few minutes drive from Empire Hotel. Reputed to be the most challenging course in SE Asia. Created from the surrounding Borneo jungle, with fairways surrounded by rainforest, including some of the native wildlife. Accurate ball placement is essential for a low score.

Panaga Golf Club - Seria
Operated by Brunei Shell's staff recreation club but open to Intrepid Tours guests. Located beside the South China Sea in the midst of the Brunei Shell staff accommodation area. It has some unique golf challenges!

Labuan International Golf Club - Labuan Island
Labuan is reached by a 1 hour ferry ride from Brunei's Serasa Ferry Terminal. The site of the Commonwealth War Graves from WWII, Labuan also has a range of other attractions and shopping to keep the non-golfers interested. An overnight stay here gives the opportunity to enjoy Labuan's renowned seafood and the busy nightlife.

About one hour's drive south of the Panaga Club course in Seria (Brunei), is the bustling Malaysian town of Miri. Miri has a similar population as the whole of Brunei, and is the service hub for the region's oil and gas, palm-oil and timber industries. It's also the embarkation point for tours to Mulu Caves, Niah Caves, and the traditional tribal communities of Sarawak.

Miri comes alive on Friday and Saturday nights with a wide variety of dining options, clubs and discos. A fun and relaxing location to conclude your golf vacation in NW Borneo.

Miri Golf Club - Miri (Sarawak)
This second golf club in Miri is actually the first golf course on Borneo. Originally developed as part of the oil and gas staff recreation facilities, the course is open to other members, and the public. In tune with its historical roots, this course is not designed for buggies, but trollies can be rented to carry club sets. Laid out on a sand spit beside the Miri estuary, with the South China Sea on the other side.

Eastwood Valley Golf and Country Club - Miri (Sarawak)
Eastwood Valley is a popular and visually attractive course which - in addition to the locals - enjoys regular use by Brunei golfers. Resort style - and spar -  hotels in MIri give a comfortable base for golfers and non-golfers to enjoy their visit.

Our golf packages have a variety of options to suit 3 to 6 day golf vacations.  Including the flexibility to fly into Brunei and out from Labuan or Miri; to minimise ground travel time and avoid backtracking.
